Our Journey

​Real change starts from within. At Empower Grassroots Initiatives, we believe local communities already hold the answers to today’s environmental and social challenges. We provide the tools, resources, and platforms needed to turn grassroots ideas into lasting movements of resilience, hope, and empowerment.

2011-2020

​Our journey began in Kisumu, organizing informal waste pickers to advocate for dignity, unity, and economic inclusion. Navigating complex systemic, institutional, and economic challenges, we expanded from local grassroots action to national coalitions across Kenya, laying the foundation for lasting, community-led change.

2021-2024

Working alongside local and global partners and media, we advanced the recognition and integration of informal waste pickers worldwide actively shaping international policy to champion a Just Transition throughout the global INC plastics treaty negotiations.

2024

Co-Creating the Vision

Deep conversations with mission-driven partners and inspirational leaders crystallized the idea of Empower as a formal organization, setting the stage for transformative growth.

Registration

What begun as a community-led idea took a major leap forward with the formal registration. Today the grassroots spark is an organised, purpose driven with a mission to serve communities where it matters most.
